What is the ALMSCHULE?

Spinning wool, observing bees and ants, planting fruit and vegetables … The new ALMSCHULE on the roof of WERK3 brings a special piece of nature back into the city for Munich’s children and young people. In hands-on workshops, they learn about the species-appropriate and resource-conserving treatment of the natural and plant world; at the same time, they are playfully familiarized with sustainability concepts, healthy nutrition and respectful animal husbandry as well as agriculture and crafts. All of this on a rooftop garden in the middle of the city right next to Ostbahnhof.

Concept and goal

The ALMSCHULE aims to anchor the concept of sustainability in the hearts and minds of children and young people. This is achieved with the help of a wide range of participatory educational measures that deal with topics such as nutrition, agriculture, nature conservation and physical activity. Thanks to its diverse and extensive equipment, the Alm auf dem Dach offers numerous opportunities to impart knowledge in a vivid way and to deepen learning material through special impressions and learning experiences. In a practical, realistic and playful way, children and young people at the AMLSCHULE learn a more conscious approach to nature, deal with ecological and economic issues and raise their awareness of sustainable development and a more careful use of the earth’s valuable resources.

Pedagogical focus

The ALMSCHULE program complements the Bavarian curriculum. Every teacher can select the ALMSCHULE learning content to suit their lessons. In addition to content-related education, the educational project promotes important life and social skills – always individually and adapted to the children’s level of development. As part of the courses, each individual is allowed to act actively, ask questions, reflect, evaluate and present their results. Of course, the focus is not only on independence but also on working in a team. The children learn to argue and debate in role plays. They strengthen their communication skills and also learn how important it is to cooperate and form interest groups. In line with the content of the individual subject areas, the children have the opportunity to present their perspectives independently and creatively as children’s editors in videos, photo stories or audio contributions. In doing so, they not only strengthen their media skills, but also realize that they themselves can become active as multipliers for environmental education and exert influence.

Societal impact

The ALMSCHULE educational project aims to prepare young people from all social backgrounds, regardless of origin, religion and education, as future decision-makers for the global challenges of social and ecological problems and in this way to strengthen and anchor awareness of sustainability, nature and the environment in society.

The Almschule is a project of the Werksviertel-Mitte Stiftung Projekte gGmbH.
