With the 2023/2024 season, the BRSO welcomed Sir Simon Rattle as its new Chief Conductor. He is the sixth in a line of important orchestra conductors after Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel and Mariss Jansons. The BRSO is one of the best orchestras in the world, according to the online magazine bachtrack.com, which has placed the orchestra third in its ranking list. The orchestra was founded in 1949 by Eugen Jochum, who was succeeded as chief conductor by Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel and Mariss Jansons. Sir Simon Rattle has held this position since the 2023/24 season. The orchestra fulfills its educational mission not only by cultivating classical music of all eras with performances in the best concert halls in Munich, Bavaria, Europe and internationally, but also through rich music education work, which includes taking ensembles from the orchestra throughout Bavaria. In the Werksviertel-Mitte, the BRSO would like to move into the Konzerthaus München in the future and contribute to enriching the cultural landscape of Munich, Bavaria and the whole of Germany and create an internationally attractive venue. The orchestra is already seeking proximity to Werksviertel-Mitte through the BRSO Container, the chamber music series “Watch This Space” (TonHalle, Technikum) or events such as the BRSO Family Day.

The popular orchestra podcast “Schoenholtz” is recorded in the BRSO container with a wide variety of guests. A visit to the recordings is possible by arrangement. In addition, the public events of the “Container Corner” series take place, as well as accompanying events for the “Watch This Space” series. The BRSO container is a meeting place, also on BRSO Family Day etc. The orchestra members can be met in a more private setting than on the “big stage”.

Soon after its foundation in 1949 by Eugen Jochum, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) developed into an internationally highly esteemed orchestra whose fame quickly spread, not least due to its intensive touring activities. The orchestra owes its extraordinarily broad repertoire and impressive sound spectrum to the various programmatic focuses of the previous chief conductors and the great flexibility and stylistic confidence of each individual musician.
