In mid-2020, the Green Tomato team came up with the idea of saving fruit and vegetables with minor flaws from being thrown away during a walk around the wholesale market in Munich. The food is purchased by the team, distributed in boxes and sold to private households in Munich.

The produce at Grüne Tomaten comes from wholesalers and growers. Not from supermarkets. These are goods with minor defects that should be returned to the producer or whose packaging is damaged. Even if it is no longer possible to store the food for longer, it finds its way to the Green Tomatoes team and is distributed quickly. The more people take part in food rescue, the more can be saved from the garbage can.
