Bridges stand for connection, for exchange. For bringing districts, countries and cultures together. For encounters between people. The view from a bridge offers new, often surprising perspectives. As if in a “no man’s land”, you stand between two shores, elevated above what separates you, perceiving the differences and similarities on both sides at the same time.
The bridge that juts out of the Werksviertel’s Container Collective is a fragment. Like an outstretched hand, the bridge sprout is directed towards Haidhausen, a gesture that remains in motion and at the same time anticipates the urban but also ideal connection of the Werksviertel to the historic city center. The walkable bridge sprout becomes a viewing platform, a place of longing, even a bit of a test of courage. And an eternal reminder to complete the missing link.
Before the bridge sprout came to Werksviertel, it was enthroned above the Isar, its materiality linked to the tradition of rafting, an association with the wooden bridges in the Alpine region. At its new location, resting on a shipping container in the urban, lively Werksviertel, the artwork thus also creates a figurative bridge to the historical part of the city.
“Bridge Sprout // Brückenspross” is a project by Atelier Bow-Wow Tokyo/Japan (Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kajima) in collaboration with the architectural firm Hannes Rössler.
