June 5 at the Container Collective was a special Wednesday among all the Wednesdays that musicians from the BRSO (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) regularly spend in one of the 27 shipping containers at Werksviertel-Mitte, a branch of the large orchestra. After some very wet days, the heavens had finally closed and the sun came out with Sir Simon Rattle and his magnificent white hair, visible from afar. The occasion was also the 75th anniversary of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, which is still waiting for its own concert hall here on the site.
The BRSO concert calendar around the special days of the anniversary has been extended beyond concerts in the Herkulessaal, the Max-Joseph-Saal and the Open Air at Odeonsplatz to include special events, including three in the TonHalle under the youth-oriented label “Watch This Space”.
June 5, with Sir Simon’s first arm movement in the middle of the Container Collective square, was thus also the prelude to extraordinary musical festivities throughout the city.
As Sir Simon is focusing particularly intensively on Bohemian-Moravian composers this year, the first movement of Janáček’s Sinfonietta Op.60 was chosen – visually very representative and glamorous – with the orchestra’s brass players lined up side by side (without the woodwinds of the original) across the entire width of the roof of their container. It is to be hoped that this fanfare marked the beginning of a final stage on the long road to the concert hall! This hope was also expressed by visitors to the square who were interviewed by Abendschau presenter Annekatrin Hentschel.
With a speed dating session between visitors and musicians, the atmosphere was once again deliberately youthful, which visibly pleased the older generation. To round off the beautiful summer day, the youngsters played once again. Patricia Cordero, Sheng Fag Chiu (both violin), Celia Elias (viola), Theresa Strasser (cello) and Jakob Plag (clarinet) brought the day to a romantic close with a clarinet quintet by Robert Fuchs.
