Under the motto “When The Sun Stands Still”, artist Alain Roche will play an early morning concert on his piano every morning for six months, hanging from a crane(!). The pianist already caused amazement and enthusiasm in 2020 with PIANO VERTICAL at Werksviertel-Mitte. This time, too, the audience can enjoy the extraordinary concerts comfortably from the floor in deckchairs while the musician plays the piano several meters above the ground.

The first concert of the six-month project will take place exactly on the winter solstice on December 22, 2023. It starts at 6.58 am and lasts until 7.45 am. Alain Roche will then greet each new day for a whole six months, until the summer solstice on June 20, 2024, with a unique composition of his piano skills and natural sounds from all over Bavaria. These will be streamed live. The highly sensitive microphones are located in the ground, under tree bark, in water, in ice and on trees at various natural sites in Bavaria. These include in the Bavarian Forest National Park, on the Zugspitze, in the Ferchenbach stream near Schloss Elmau, in the moorland near Bad Heilbrunn and also on the Stadt-Hochalm, which is located on the roof of WERK3. The awakening of nature thus becomes part of this incomparable composition.

Guests listen to Roche’s piano playing via headphones as well as the natural sounds that are sent live into the music by sound designers on the ground. Each concert is unique, the exact time and duration of the concert depends on the elliptical orbit of the earth. The beginning and end of the performance are different every day. The aim of this unusual project – a collaboration between Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst, Alain Roche and the State Ministry of Science – is to connect rural and urban space. “It’s about the cyclical nature, the diversity and richness of our landscapes and the protection of our biotopes,” say the initiators.
